We know that our four-legged friends are amazing, but did you know that sleeping with them is excellent for our health too?

We are a nation of dog lovers. In fact, 27% of us own a dog; a figure that increased spectacularly over lockdown. Our canine friends are more than just pets; they are the furry addition to our families. Research has revealed that they offer us so much more than just companionship. Studies have shown that our pups have a positive impact on our health, and by sleeping with them, they can contribute to a better night’s sleep, help us feel protected and even assist in reducing allergies.

Sleeping with your dog is somewhat divisive, but we are here to tell you why it’s worth trying. Don’t fear- you won’t have to endure a night squeezed out of your bed by your spread-eagled pet; instead, you might just sleep like a log. If your pet is on the larger side, however, you may want to invest in a superking bed!

  • Helps with depression

Therapy dogs are renowned for helping people with depression, and their company is excellent for releasing the hormones that promote happiness and wellbeing. Just having a snuggle with your pup stimulates the release of dopamine and serotonin, making you feel safe, happy and secure—the perfect combination for a relaxing night’s sleep.

  • Encourages deeper sleep

Several studies have shown that cuddling up with your pup at night increases your flow of oxytocin, a hormone which promotes sleep.

  • Lowers blood pressure

Sleeping with your four-legged friend has a profound impact on your blood pressure. Research has shown that simply touching your dog or feeling him sleeping alongside you, reduces your blood pressure. A lower blood pressure equals a lower risk of heart disease and stroke, so that’s good news all around!

  • Keeps you warm

Let’s face it, when the weather turns, sleeping with a dog is like having a giant hot water bottle in your bed – and a super cute one at that! Pile up the blankets and you will be feeling snug all night long. Whether you are snoozing in a double or a superking bed, you are guaranteed a cosy slumber.

  • Helps loneliness

Having your pup with you in bed is the perfect antidote to feelings of loneliness. They provide you with company, and sometimes just simply tuning in to the breathing of your pet beside you is enough to help you feel less alone.

  • Offer a feeling of secureness and protection

A dog’s instinct is to protect its pack, and you happen to be their pack. By sleeping alongside you, your pet can help you feel safe at night-time. Dogs sleep lighter than humans and always have an ear out for any dangers, so you can rest assured that they will hear and alert you to any disturbances.

  • Reduces allergies

Children who grow up with dogs are scientifically proven to have fewer allergies as they grow older. The National Library of Medicine reported that pet exposure could be positive for a child’s immune development.

  • Reduces stress levels

Cuddling your pet is an effective way to combat tension. The act reduces levels of cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress.

And when it’s not a good idea…

It’s not always a good idea to kip with your pup. For example, if you aren’t blessed with a larger bed, such as a superking bed, and you lack the space, you will probably find it pretty disruptive. And, if any of the following applies it is best to leave those cuddles to evenings in front of the TV:

  • If there are any behavioural issues with your dog.
  • If you have allergies, for example, asthma.
  • If your pet isn’t house trained.
