A lack of sleep can cause all sorts of problems in our daily lives – and not just bad moods. If you’re having problems sleeping it helps to understand the importance of sleep and what you can do if you want to learn how to sleep better.

Why sleep is so important for us

Our bodies and brains are amazing. They carry out incredible work while we sleep, but what is it they actually do?

  • the brain detoxes (by removing waste products from the brain cells!)
  • hormones are released
  • memories are stored
  • energy is replenished.

And that’s not all. If you’ve been pushing your body hard recently it will repair the muscles and tissues while you sleep, and if you’ve been unwell your body will stimulate your immune system to help you fight illness. Impressive isn’t it? And these are only some of the many reasons why sleep is so important and why it’s vital to know how to sleep better.

How much sleep do we need?

It’s said that we need between 6 and 10 hours of sleep a night, but it’s not just about the amount of sleep we get. The quality counts too. If our sleep is interrupted, so is the body’s vital work.

So, how to sleep better?

Get into a routine – establishing a healthy bedtime routine is important and can be as simple as taking a warm bath an hour before bed, or turning off technology and winding down with a book. Make a list of everything you need to do the next day so you can clear your mind. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time each morning.

Those on shift work might find it hard to have a routine, but blackout blinds, a good eye mask, and earplugs will help you sleep when you need to.

Love your bedroom – make your bedroom an inviting space that makes it easy to switch off. Bring indoor plants into the bedroom for their calming and air purifying properties, and keep a throw handy for colder nights. Place soft lighting by the bed for bedtime reading or listen to some podcasts designed to help you sleep.

How’s your bed? A quality bed will help you sleep better but make sure your bed is right for you. Beds with footboards as seen on this Victorian bedstead are beautiful but won’t suit you if you’re tall. Not being able to stretch out in comfort is a sure way to cramp your sleeping style! If your feet hang over the end of your bed, opt for a bed with a low footboard like this oak bed frame. Or go footboard free with this wooden storage bed.

Check your mattress – if your mattress is old and feeling a bit lumpy then it’s time for a change. Your mattress should support your body in all the right places. Did you know, if you sleep on your back then you should choose a firmer mattress? This stops your spine from curving. If you sleep on your front you can go a little softer, and if you’re a side sleeper a little softer still.
