Restore your energy levels and revitalise your sleep patterns by adopting an ancient Chinese philosophy in your bedroom.

Does your bedroom feel a little lacklustre? Are you having trouble achieving a restful night’s sleep? An ancient Chinese practice, Feng Shui, may just be the answer. Quite literally translating to ‘wind and water’, Feng Shui is a philosophy that believes an individual’s well-being can be enhanced by the balance of their physical environment. It focuses on the free flow of Chi (or natural energy) within a space.

According to Feng Shui, ditching the clutter and aligning a room can yield good health and fortune. So, where do you begin creating a Feng Shui bedroom?

Your bedroom and Feng Shui

We spend a third of our lives in our bedrooms. The bedroom is a place where we can unwind and put the day to rest. The Chinese philosophy believes that when we are at rest, we are more likely to absorb the energy around us. Your bedroom is a fantastic place to start implementing Feng Shui. Invoking restorative energy, it can also be a budget friendly alternative to redecorating. What’s great about a Feng Shui bedroom is that it can be achieved in just a few small tweaks, resulting in a tranquil space to recharge and enhance a peaceful night’s sleep.

How can you create a Feng Shui bedroom?

  • Align the bed

The bed is the focal point of a bedroom. Feng Shui encourages placing the bed out of direct line of the door. You want to be able to see the door, but not have the bed in its path. It is believed that sleeping in the pathway of the door opens a person up to all forces that enter the bedroom.

  • Strictly no under bed storage

According to Feng Shui, a bed with storage underneath must be avoided at all costs. Keeping the area below the bed free from belongings allows Chi to circulate freely. This creates balance and induces a restful sleep in a Feng Shui bedroom. If you can, choose a bed where the base that does not touch the floor.

  • Accessorise in pairs

Choose two bedside tables; one for either side of the bed. This creates symmetry and balance. It is believed that one bedside table alone can bring negative energy but two can manifest romance. Keep with the same theme with lamps and so on. However, steer clear of any furniture with angles. Instead opt for smooth rounded items, such as a circular stool, which will not interfere with universal energy.

  • Keep your bedroom clutter-free

Most people would agree that a bedroom full of clutter can make you feel restless. A Feng Shui bedroom that is clutter-free creates a feeling of serenity, which helps us unwind. The Chinese philosophy believes that clutter also restricts the flow of energy in our space. Avoid stacking up books or piling up clothes and invest in some suitable storage such as a blanket box or a spacious wardrobe to keep your bedroom in order.

  • Refrain from keeping electronics in the bedroom

Health professionals have long maintained keeping away from electronics at bedtime and to restrain from working in a bedroom. Feng Shui maintains that by working in your bedroom, you are disconnecting your body’s association between the room and rest. Electronics release electromagnetic energy even when unused, and it is recommended to keep them out of the bedroom.

  • Choose the right colours

Opt for calm restorative colours such as off whites, creams and browns. Warm and earthy tones promote rest and encourage a connection with the environment. You can do this by bringing in carefully chosen accessories: choosing warm throws and incorporating the right artwork.

Feng Shui is a fantastic philosophy to incorporate in your home and bedroom. In fact, a 2018 study in Malaysia found that adapting Feng Shui within a bedroom had proven results of greater sleep efficiency, amongst a small group of research participants. For those new to the practice of Feng Shui, try taking little adjustments slowly to see if you notice an improvement in your mood and energy levels.
